Frequently asked questions

Your teeth should not hurt after a deep cleaning. A very few people may experience some sensitivity or tenderness afterwards but that should go away after a day or two. This mainly depends on what gum disease is occurring and how severe it is. If you are experiencing pain after a deep cleaning it is recommended that you call your dental hygienist who can offer the best advice for you personally.
If not done correctly and carefully then yes. With the right equipment and skills a scale and polish from a dental hygienist will not damage your teeth or gums. If the cleaning is not done with care and precision then the enamel and cementum of the teeth can be scratched and in some cases chipped away.
It may be a simple fix of seeing us for a scale and polish to have the plaque, tartar, and stains on the outside of your teeth removed or it’s possible that your teeth will need whitening with a bleaching product to restore their whiteness.
If you are experiencing halitosis or bad breath you could have a number of different conditions. Most commonly you will likely have plaque, tartar, and bacteria building up in the mouth causing gum disease. Then by-products of the bacteria and gum disease cause bad breath. Alternatively it could be a symptom of other health issues happening further down the digestive tract, or of lesions in the mouth.

    Our Philosophy

    Jacinda Roper, Owner

At The Dental Hygienist we have a passion for oral health and have long been promoting the importance of prevention. Prevention plays a crucial role in gaining and maintaining the best oral health possible and also lessens the risks with systemic health issues related to gum disease.

Gum disease has been linked to increasing the risks of health issues such as diabetes, low birth weights, premature birth, oral cancer, heart disease and stroke. If you are pregnant or already at risk of these adverse health conditions then it is even more important for you to visit to minimise your risk. Keeping your mouth healthy is just a small step in looking after your whole body.
